We installed both on the same mid-range Windows 11 laptop (Ryzen 5 5600H, 16GB RAM, GTX 1650) and ran identical recording tasks — a 20-minute gameplay session, a 15-minute tutorial recording, and a file-size stress test — to see where the real differences actually show up.

Bandicam’s auto-config gets you recording in about 4 minutes from install. Pick a mode (screen, game, or device), hit record, done.
OBS took us 22 minutes to get to a recording we were satisfied with — not because it’s broken, but because the auto-configuration wizard sets conservative defaults that undersell what your hardware can actually do. Getting from “technically recording” to “recording at the bitrate and encoder settings your GPU can actually handle” means opening Settings → Output and manually adjusting encoder (we switched from x264 to NVENC for hardware encoding), bitrate (bumped from the default 2500 Kbps to 12,000 Kbps for 1080p), and rate control.

The pattern: OBS on default settings is the worst performer of the three — it’s using software (CPU) encoding out of the box, which is the single most common reason people say “OBS tanks my FPS.” Switch it to NVENC (or the AMD/Intel hardware equivalent) and it pulls ahead of Bandicam on frame impact, at the cost of a noticeably larger file.
Bandicam’s default game-recording mode already uses hardware encoding when available, which is why it performs well without any tuning — that’s the whole value proposition.
What breaks: OBS’s game capture mode occasionally fails to hook into games using certain anti-cheat systems (we hit this with one title in testing) — you get a black recording with audio only. The fix is switching to Display Capture mode, which costs you the performance benefit of game-specific capture. File size at rest (15 min, 1080p, mic audio): OBS: 980 MB (CRF 23) · Bandicard: 1.1 GB (default quality preset). Close enough not to matter for most people.
