Session 1 — OBS at default settings

Session 3 — OBS with hardware encoding enabled

Recording: Same settings, switched encoder from x264 to NVENC (hardware).

Result: Comparable quality to Session 2 at a noticeably smaller file size — hardware encoding is more efficient per unit of quality, not just faster.

Note: This is genuinely the best free-tier setup found across this whole test — hardware encoding plus a reasonable bitrate, matching paid tools on both quality and reasonable file size.

Session 4 — Xbox Game Bar at default settings

Recording: Same content, Windows’ built-in recorder, no manual settings available to adjust.

Result: Comparable to OBS’s Session 2/3 quality, without needing manual configuration — Game Bar’s defaults are already reasonably well-tuned, unlike OBS’s more conservative out-of-box settings.

Note: For someone who doesn’t want to touch settings at all, Game Bar’s built-in defaults outperform OBS’s defaults specifically because Game Bar doesn’t require manual tuning to reach decent quality.

Free tools can match paid software’s output quality — the gap people experience is almost always a default-settings problem, not a capability ceiling.
